T hey should ditch the battery pack, electric motor and range extender and replace it with the motor and transmission from the HP4 Race.
Remove the rear seat, replace the front seats with the buckets from the M4 CSL, and give it the M4 CSL steering wheel with paddle shifters for the sequential trans. Put it on Öhlins coil-overs, B rembo brakes, wide gold BBS basket weave wheels with Pilot Sport Cup tires. Give it box flares. Call it the i3Motorrad

Isn’t that a SMART car?

I had one pull up and park right next to me while walking the other day. I would absolutely welcome a moto engine swap for its safety merits alone.

Why remove the rear seats? It isn’t that much weight. You’re talking about a 2,600lb car that will become 2,200lb’s when you strip the batteries. A dd back the H4 engine, you’re looking at maybe 2,550lb’s? That’s crazy light for that powerful an engine. You would probably only get like 25mpg though is my guess, but it would be fun to drive.

My take is that
it needs a modified body Alpina version.

Nope, it’s a V ery S tupid c ar .

What it really needs is like a 1" lift, AWD, and some plastic cladding. It isn’t crossovery enough. I need my neighbors and co-workers to know how much I enjoy the outdoors and how adventurous I am, while still caring about the environment!
P.S. please don't actually do this BMW, the world does not need more crossovers

For practical reasons, you don’t want that hp4 race engine in anything. Its only good for 5k km. I would imagine less with that much more weight to haul around. I would rather the kawi h2 engine

What about this screams, “Practical”?

lol fai r enough, but I would want it to last longer than an oil change!

Ditch the batteries and electric motors.
Put the turbo 4 from the Cooper S in the back.

Nein.

YES! It doesn’t even need to be the HP4 motor, the regular S1000RR one will be sufficient.
Will probably end up cheaper as well.

The whole point of the cars is thebatteries and motors, as much ad we hate them. May as well ditch the whole bloody thing and pick something RWD, better suited to performance but just as small...like the M2.

These are also RWD.

Wait, did you get the motorcycle idea from Torch?
https://jalopnik.com/bmw-is-dropping-the-range-extender-version-of-the-bmw-i-1829527771
If they had, I’d also have pushed for a gas-only i3 that used one of BMW’s flat-twin motorcycle engines, mounted under the floor at the rear.

Honestly I didn't read the article, just saw the headline and was going to post this as a comment, but posted it here instead.

with the added weight... I would go with the torque of the K1600 engine.
